About Stephen B. Buckbee

Living Satir’s Legacy

Stephen B. Buckbee was named a “Living Treasure” by the Virginia Satir Global Network in 2013, in recognition of his decades-long commitment to studying and sharing Satir’s work. His journey began in 1985 under Satir’s direct mentorship, and it has been shaped by experiences in hospitals, courts, detox units, and other high-intensity social work environments. As a Licensed Master’s Social Worker and Professional Counselor in Michigan, Stephen has combined frontline practice with teaching, guiding students and clients alike through practical, human-centered methods. His tenure at Bay College earned him multiple faculty awards, including the Michigan Education Association’s “Outstanding Person in Education,” highlighting a rare balance of classroom excellence and field expertise.

Beyond Michigan, Stephen has contributed globally as a past president and active member of the Virginia Satir Global Network, and as a faculty member of the Banmen Satir China Management Center. Through BDD Training Associates, he trains organizations to integrate communication and coping strategies using Satir’s Process of Change. Stephen approaches his work as a social artist, helping individuals recognize their inherent value and apply practical tools, from sculpting exercises to the Iceberg model, in daily life. He lives in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with his spouse, Toni, continuing to translate Satir’s insights into accessible and actionable guidance.
