What we observe in others or in ourselves is only a fraction of the whole story. In my clinical work, I have seen people react strongly to situations without understanding why. Visible behavior such as blaming, placating, or withdrawing reflects deeper influences. Beneath the surface lie perceptions, expectations, and yearnings shaped by personal history, family rules, and past experiences.
Virginia Satir’s Iceberg model provides a framework for exploring these hidden layers. Observed behavior shows where attention is needed, but the deeper work involves noticing what drives those actions. Tension in the shoulders, a knot in the stomach, or shallow breathing can point to old beliefs still active in the present. Awareness of these signals creates an opportunity to examine the story behind the reaction.
Curiosity is essential in this process. Asking questions such as “What am I feeling in this moment?” or “Which past experience might this response reflect?” opens space for observation without judgment. Sculpting exercises or mindfulness practices make hidden influences tangible. Holding a clay figure of a family scene or noting bodily tension helps uncover connections between past experiences and current behavior.
Everyone, at any point, is doing the best they can based on what they know and understand. Acknowledging this allows reflection to be grounded in respect and patience. Observing the iceberg beneath the waterline reveals coping stances and habitual responses that once supported survival but may no longer serve the present.
The goal is insight, not perfection. Looking beneath the surface helps identify where attention and intentional action can create coherence in thoughts, emotions, and interactions. Curiosity guides the journey, and careful observation turns understanding into a practical tool for daily life.
